Operation Frequent Wind, the evacuation of the US Embassy in Saigon is the largest recorded helicopter evacuation.

The North Vietnamese were beginning their final offensive of the Vietnam War in March of 1975.

The South Vietnamese troops had retreated, giving up Quang Tri, Da Nang, Qui Nhon, Tuy Hoa, Nha Trang and Xuan Loc.

As the North Vietnamese pressed in on Saigon, US Ambassador Graham Martin gave the authorization to evacuate.
